Database researcher Jim Gray had developed a satellite Earth-images database and wanted to apply a similar technique to organizing the many disparate astronomical databases of sky images.As of October 2008, WWT had “1.5 million active users.”
As of February 2012 the earth science applications of WWT are showcased and supported by the layerscape community collaboration website, also created by Microsoft research.
The software which was created by Microsoft in which they built a Universe inside the software and which displays the astronomical world such as skymaps,stars,planets,satellites and more u need to experience by downloading the amazing software.Simply u can experience the 3D Universe in your computer. It can also be used to visualise arbitrary or abstract data sets and time series data, using the power of a PC graphics card to render up to a half million data points. Images are taken from the Hubble Space telescope and approximately ten earth-bound telescopes. It is possible to view the sky in many wavelengths of light.The software utilizes Microsoft’s Visual Experience Engine technologies to function. The program runs on Microsoft windows in co ordinance with silver light. The program is designed to scale from web browser to desktop to large multi-channel full dome digital planetarium.In which this software gives my childhood experience back which was a school trip in my local Gandhi Planetarium Vijayawada

Do not attempt to install WWT 5.0 on Windows XP. It does not run and can potentially prevent the legacy version from running.
